#### Abstract
The need to introduce high level configurability and programmability into the data plane of network appliances is now stronger than ever, with hyperscalers demanding custom network forwarding functions, and hardware offload becoming increasingly relevant for high-speed networking. However, general purpose programming languages like C are unsuited for this task, due to the difficulty of compiling high level code into Domain-Specific Architectures for packet processing. Instead, the community has come up with the P4 DSL, which attempts to define a portable, easy to use language for hardware packet forwarding data planes.
In this talk, P4 is extensively presented in both its high-level design principles and goals, but also through hands on code examples that showcase its effectiveness and simplicity. Additionally, the talk discusses the status and level of maturity of this technology, after the 10th anniversary of the release of its first official specification.

Mario Baldi got a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, where he now holds an Associate Professor position. His day job however is at AMD, where he converged after their acquisition of Pensando Systems back in 2022. At AMD, he currently works in the research division for networking for AI.

#### Abstract
Modern "cloud-native" software relies on extensive intra-host communication between distributed application fragments (microservices) to implement large scale deployments. Typically, such communication is achieved through virtual network functions that allow to replicate physical topologies entirely within the software domain. Despite the undoubted convenience, this approach leads to added cost, as moving packets through virtual networks incurs expensive overheads.
This talk goes through the motivations, design and implementation of Netto, a tool that leverages eBPF to isolate and measure the CPU cost of the network stack in Linux, as being able to estimate the cost of software network functions is the first step towards addressing it. Additionally, the talk highlights the strengths and weaknesses of using eBPF for tracing applications, particularly in how system performance is affected by the inherent cost of entering the eBPF sandbox, scaled by the frequency of its invocations.

#### Abstract
Unikernels are specialized, single-address-space machine images constructed by using library operating systems. While the concept of linking library operating systems (libOSes) to applications was first devised in the late 1990s, libOSes have had little popularity on bare metal machines, mainly held back by their complexity in sharing the resources of physical servers among different applications. Modern virtualized environments however represent an ideal scenario for this approach, with Virtual Machines dedicated to individual applications, and the multiplexing of hardware resources delegated to an external component, the Hypervisor. In this context, unikernels can help reduce the overheads of traditional virtual machines, such as slow boot times and high resource footprint, while guaranteeing stronger isolation compared to containers.
In the first part of this talk, we will explore the main concepts at the base of unikernels, how they compare to traditional virtual machines and containers, and the main research and commercial implementations currently available. In the second part of the talk, we will present SURE, a novel framework based on unikernels, designed to accelerate the operation of serverless computing, thanks to a high-performance data plane for communication between user functions and lightweight sidecar-level functionalities embedded in the unikernel.
