The CompetencyKG is a knowledge graph and an application to model and manage competencies in a business environment. An organisation can use it to describe what kind of competencies are relevant and how they are distributed over the organisation. These descriptions can be applied in several use cases like expert search or project recommendation. See here for a detailed description of use cases.

In detail, the application provides functionality to describe three groups of entities:

  • competencies (for instance in the AI domain: tasks, methods, metrics, materials)
  • agents holding competencies (persons, organisations)
  • business objects applying competencies (projects, applications, functionalities, processes). Relationships between these three groups can be modelled to express who is holding specific competencies and where competencies are applied.

Based on these relationships, one can search with respect to competencies (e.g. find all projects where competencies X and Y were applied) or get competency-related recommendations (e.g. person P works on an application where competencies X and Y are applied, so she might also hold these competencies).

As we rely on semantic web standards to model the data, the graph can easily be extended with external data sources or applications. For instance, the Microsoft Academic Knowledge Graph is used to retrieve additional information about publications that mention competencies. Further, the CSO Classifier is incorporated to extract competencies from research publications inserted into the graph.
