From what I can tell from my own experiments, the cutoff point from near to far is 100 tiles, not 101.
i.e.
5–99 squares: to the [direction]
100–250 squares: far to the [direction]
So if I'm right, the exiva overlay is off by one. Would be good if someone else could check this too, just in case I made a mistake.

Character to exiva stands here: 32624,31919,7
I stand here: 32592,32019,7 and they are 'far to the north', and that's a difference of 100 in the y axis.
I take one step closer north, 32592,32018,7, so now I am 99 tiles away, and they are 'to the north'.
Also tested with west and south, same thing - seemed to be 99 tiles for close and 100 tiles for far.
