The Settings Sidebar is used to customize key aspects of the page or post being published. It is an essential component of the WordPress Block Editor.

Previously introduced in WordPress 5.6 as "Document Settings," this sidebar has been renamed to "Page/Post Settings." Depending on whether you are working on a Post or Page, the sidebar tab is named accordingly. If you are working with a custom post type such as "Article," the tab will display the custom post type name.

How to open the Page/Post Settings

In the upper-right corner of the WordPress Editor, select the gear icon. This toggles the sidebar. Within the sidebar:

The left tab features settings for the entire Page or Post you are working on.

The right tab displays settings for the selected Block.

Settings Sidebar

The Settings Sidebar contains different sections based on your theme and installed plugins. Below are the default sections:

Featured Image

The Featured Image, also known as a Post Thumbnail, is used by themes to represent the post visually.

Drag and drop an image or click Set Featured Image to open the Media Library.

You can Replace or Remove the selected image anytime.

Excerpt

This optional section is available for post types with excerpts enabled.

Excerpts provide a summary that may be used on homepages, archive pages, or search results.

If left empty, WordPress auto-generates an excerpt using the first 55 words.

Status and Visibility

Draft: The post is not yet published.

Pending Review: Marked for review before publishing.

Private: Only visible to site admins and editors.

Scheduled: The post will be published on a specified date.

Published: The post is live and visible to all users.

Password Protected: Requires a password for viewing.

Sticky (New in 6.7): The sticky toggle for posts is now found in the Status and visibility popover.

Publish

  • Choose to publish immediately or schedule for a later time.
  • Adjust the date and time manually.

Slug

  • Defines the URL for the post or page.
  • Editable unless the Permalink structure is set to Plain.

Author

  • Displays the current author and allows selection of a different author (if permissions allow).

Template

  • Select a template from available options.
  • If using a block theme, you can Edit Template or Create New Template.

Discussion

  • Enable or disable comments.
  • Enable or disable pingbacks & trackbacks.

Post Format (Available for certain themes)

  • Allows choosing a format like Standard, Gallery, Video, etc.

Parent (For Hierarchical Post Types)

  • Assign a parent page to organize content hierarchically.
  • Change the order of pages.

Move to Trash

  • Deletes the post or page, moving it to trash for 30 days before permanent deletion.

Categories and Tags

  • Assign categories and tags to organize posts.
  • Add new categories directly from the sidebar.

How to Customize

  • Ensure all screenshots are updated to reflect the latest WordPress version.
  • Ensure all videos are current.
  • Add ALT text for all images.
  • Update headings to follow sentence case.
  • Convert all reusable blocks into regular blocks.

The Site Editor Settings Sidebar

The Site Editor includes a Settings Sidebar for managing templates and template parts.
